Blog and Forum Etiquette guidelines:

  • Partnership, Valley and City business only: Please post messages that is related to Partnership and Valley business only or information that the whole group could benefit from (i.e., benefit for a Alexandria Charity). Other messages, such as jokes, should not be posted
  • Discuss issues/problems, not individuals: Keep discussion of difficult issues focused on the issues/problems, not the people involved. Do not name individuals in a way that is negative, harmful, or defamatory. Please use names, though, when sending or thank-you or a kudo!
  • Follow the Washington Post Rule: Remember a blog is a public communication, not a private conversation. Do not put anything in a post that you would not be comfortable seeing - with your name attached - on the pages of the Washington Post.
  • Avoid speculation: Avoid posting messages that pass on information that might not be true or might only be partially true.
  • Follow the golden rule: Treat other people the same way you would want them to treat you. Please disagree in a friendly and respectful manner.
  • Be careful with humor and sarcasm: Tone of voice rarely translates in an email, post of forum message.
  • Reread your message before posting: Rereading your message before you post it may help you spot missing words or other things that may be confusing.

    Next January, PBS will broadcast a new historical series on public television called "Mercy Street." This will be the first time in over a decade that a PBS dramatic series has been produced in the United States - and the story takes place in Alexandria in the Spring of 1862 and centers on health care and hospitals! It has been described by the producers as "E.R. for the Civil War," and is expected to be the "next Downton Abbey."

    Mercy Street follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposite sides of the Civil War conflict. One is a staunch New England abolitionist. The other is a naive young Confederate "belle." The two confront each other in Alexandria, Virginia, a Confederate-occupied city located just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C., the North's seat of power.

    The Alexandria Film Festival will host the premier screening of Mercy Street with a full episode of the series on November 5, 2015, the first day of the Festival.

    Sponsors for the festival which is scheduled for November 5 through 8, 2015 are needed. PBS, of course, will be heavily promoting the Mercy Street program starting this fall and this would be an opportunity to associate yourself with the film -- and at the same time help the AFF, now in its 9th year. 

    Some of the events this year will be exclusive to sponsors and other VIPs and will not be open to the general public. 

    We're deep into reviewing films submitted to the festival from around the world and are now developing the exhibition program.

    Do you accept credit cards as payment for the goods and services that you provide to your customers?  These days, most small businesses answer “yes” to that question.  For those who currently swipe the magnetic stripe on credit cards, including most restaurant and retail establishments, there are major changes coming soon that may have serious implications for your business. 

    The major credit/debit card issuers have begun to distribute new cards that contain an embedded chip on the front which should make fraudulent card use more difficult.  The fraud reduction benefits of the new cards will not be realized if merchants do not have the technology to accept the new cards.  It is important for all merchants who accept these cards to upgrade to the new technology because on October 1, 2015 there will be a shift in the fraud liability.  This means that after that date, merchants who swipe chip cards will be liable, rather than the bank, for any fraudulent transactions. 

    What should you do? 

    1.     First, if you have not already been contacted by your merchant services provider, payment processor, or financial institution, you should contact them.  The solution for each merchant will depend on how they have set up their payment processing, how it interfaces with their POS (Point of Sale) system, etc.  At the very least, you will need to acquire new devices that will be able to process the new cards in place of the swipe machines currently in use.  There are varying charges and steps necessary, depending on the system that you use.  Again, your best source of information should be your current processor.

    2.     If you find that the new technology changes will not work with your current POS system, and you want to continue with that system, you may need a change in processing companies.  This is why all merchants who swipe cards should be taking action now – October will be here sooner than you think.

    3.     There is a great deal of information in the press and on the Internet about these changes.  One of the most complete and unbiased resources is  This site has listings of videos, Frequently-asked Questions, and other information to help you.  Educate yourself now, talk with your providers, and begin to determine the best solution for your particular circumstances.


    At 9am on September 23rd, the Alexandria SBDC will be presenting a one-hour workshop on this issue to clear up and clarify any remaining issues.  The Presenters will be Chris Harrison and Scott Johnston of WorldPay.  We encourage everyone who accepts credit card transactions to attend this free one-hour session.  Registration is through the SBDC website

    Alexandria City Council is currently considering a request by NOVA Parks that the city renew the current lease on Cameron Run Park for another 40 Years, at the current rate of $0.25 per year, $10.00 for the life of the lease. NOVA Parks is interested in renewing the lease 6 years earlier than the expiration of the current lease, apparently to allow them to make unspecified capital improvements to the park. Although we at Eisenhower Partnership do not oppose the current use in principle, we question committing to another 40 years without exploring best uses for over 39 acres of land for the next 40 years. We have already sent a letter asking the council to consider this matter carefully, please see the link here: Letter to City Council.pdf.

    Also, a petition is currently being circulated by a group called Concerned Citizens of Alexandria, asking for a steering committee to study the matter before deciding (Here).

    This information is only to inform. Cameron Run Park has been an important part of the Eisenhower Valley. It is our opinion that careful consideration is required before making a move of this importance.

    On September 29th the Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association held their annual meeting and published their 2014 Annual Report. This report is a review of economic growth and a new marketing campaign for Alexandria in 2014 and a look ahead at what is to be expected in 2015.  ACVA launched an aggressive new marketing approach in 2014 to promote the Alexandria tourism sector. The brand was titled “Extraordinary Alexandria” and drew the beautiful story of the vibrant, contemporary Alexandria experience one gets in our inspirational historical City. The report describes the increase in sales and economic impact tourism has had on the city as well as increases in the King Street Trolley and National Harbor Water Taxi ridership. From FY13 to FY14 ACVA has had a 5% increase in actualized sales revenue and has reached a much larger regional target radius through their new marketing campaign.

    Looking forward to 2015, the ACVA report states, “In Carlyle, the National Science Foundation broke ground on their new headquarters, which promises an important new source of visitation when it opens in 2017. Continuing development of Potomac Yards and its potential to add a 5th Metro stop will further expand our position as a city of neighborhoods. Across the river, our neighbors in National Harbor opened the Tanger Outlet mall, added the Capital (ferris) Wheel, and broke ground on the MGM casino, which will include a 3000 seat entertainment complex, all creating additional attractions that will complement the Alexandria experience.”

    On September 27th, ground was broken by family members of fallen Alexandria Police officers and the Alexandria Police Foundation on a new memorial honoring the 18 Alexandria Police officers who have died in the line of duty since the 1800s. The memorial is to stand in front of the Alexandria Police Department's Wheeler Avenue headquarters and fundraising for memorial was taken over by the Alexandria Police Foundation in 2013. The Alexandria Police Department is still fundraising to make a memorial that would "properly honor the courage, sacrifice and memory of these officers."

    The Eisenhower Partnership has donated $1000 to the fund as a part of our responsibility to the community and the Police force that serves to protect our community every day.
